Maastunnel Rotterdam

Crosssube connects. Renovation with future-proof solutions.

The large-scale renovation of the Maastunnel in Rotterdam involved replacing all of its existing technical installations. There are 150 kilometers of electricity cable inside the tunnel alone. The cable was installed by Van Dorp Kabelwerken and Crosscube worked closely with the company on this project.

On both sides of the tunnel, under and around what are known as the “staging squares”, there are many kilometers of cables that power lighting, information portals, traffic lights, detection loops and surveillance cameras. These cables are located within casing pipes, connected to each other via access chambers, inspection chambers and (cable) inspection chambers. Van Dorp Kabelwerken was commissioned to renovate the Maas Tunnel and wanted to enlist the help of an expert partner.

Access chamber solution

Support the customer with knowledge, expertise and solutions related to access chambers. Using the construction drawings and project plans, Crosscube created a detailed sketch of all of the access chambers and different versions with specific connections, etc, and/or took the existing connections from the construction drawings and defined these chamber by chamber. An extensive project quotation was then issued, including detailed drawings for each installation needed to realise the project. Based on these drawings, we sat down with the customer to choose the most optimal solution together. By optimal, we mean not only in terms of sizing the access chamber in relation to the available space in the tunnel, but also optimal in terms of design, correct connections and correct dimensions, as well as in terms of stability, class, service life and durability.

Result

A project delivered precisely according to the planning and wishes of all involved, and one that is future-proof. The design of the underground infrastructure accounted for more capacity than was required, thereby ensuring that additional applications that require new cables, such as new signaling or other traffic installations, can be added simply in the future via the current access chamber installation.
